Dussehra, also well-known as Vijayadashami is a great Hindu festival celebrated in across India and Nepal. The other famous names are Dashahara, Dasara, Durgotsav and Navaratri.
There are numbers of legend behind the celebration of Dushehara but according to the Hindu scriptures the two main legends of Maa Durga and Ramayan are very popular.
According to Purana, VIjayadashami is celebrated as this day Maa Durga got the victory in the battle with demon Mahishasura. The meaning of Vijayadashami has hidden in the word. Vijaya means victory and dashami-the tenth day. This way the Vijayadashami matched with the legend. Maa goddess beheaded the demon Mahisasur on the tenth day of the battle. The nine days the Goddess Durga is worshipped with ritual ceremonies. The aarti of Maa Durga is chanted. The nine days the battle between Goddess Durga and demon Mahisasura was continued but on the tenth day of the battle Maa Durga got the triumph over Mahishasura. For the Victory, this day is celebrated as “Vijayadasami”.
Another legend of Ramayan also attached with the celebration of this Dasha-Hara festival. Lord Rama-the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu got the victory over the Demon King Ravana. According to Puranas, Lord Rama was got the exile by his father for 14 years. He went on with his wife-Sita and brother-Laxmana. During the exile, the demon Ravan abducted Lord Rama’s consort by counterfeit and took her in his golden palace-the Kingdom of Lanka. To get back her wife-Sita, he conflicted against the King Ravana with the help of his younger brother Laxmana, the Hanuman-his devoted follower and a big army of monkeys. On the tenth day of the battle he killed Ravna and made his wife free from the trap of demon Ravna. This way the tenth day means “Duseehra” is celebrated as the victory of good over evil.
